As part of the BHCAC Community 50+ Programme, members, friends of the Centre and guests from the wider Brent community came together on 17 October 2026 at the Bosnia and Herzegovina Community Advice Centre (BHCAC) for an enjoyable afternoon celebrating sevdalinka, the traditional folk song of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Led by Zaim Pašić, Chair of BHCAC, the gathering provided an opportunity to reflect on the rich cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina through music, conversation and shared experiences. Discussions explored the history, language and traditions that have helped shape and preserve sevdalinka across generations.
The event also welcomed guests from diverse cultural backgrounds, creating opportunities for cultural exchange and mutual understanding. Through conversation and the translation of song lyrics, participants shared the stories and emotions behind sevdalinka, highlighting the power of music to connect people across cultures and communities.
The warm and welcoming atmosphere was complemented by traditional Bosnian coffee served at BHCAC's Džezva Café, together with homemade refreshments prepared by volunteers Sandra Saldhana and Amira Džonlić. Sandra also treated attendees to a traditional Brazilian carrot cake topped with chocolate, adding an international flavour to the occasion.
The event reflected the aims of the Community 50+ Programme, promoting social inclusion, cultural preservation and stronger community connections through meaningful shared experiences. The afternoon concluded with a shared sense of friendship, belonging and mutual respect, reflecting the values at the heart of BHCAC's work.
This update was prepared using event reflections kindly provided by Community 50+ participant Semira Jakupović.
BHCAC extends its sincere thanks to all participants and volunteers whose contributions helped make the event such a success. We look forward to welcoming members and friends to future Community 50+ activities.
